Why Fairfield Patients Choose Us
Dr. Ivan Cohen was the first physician in Connecticut to earn certification from the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. Fewer than 300 physicians worldwide hold ABHRS certification. He was also the first physician in New England to perform robotic follicular unit excision.
ABHRS certification evaluates knowledge, technical skills, safety, and aesthetic judgment through written and oral examinations focused specifically on hair restoration surgery. Dr. Cohen is the Center’s ABHRS-certified physician.
| ABHRS-Certified Surgeon | Surgeon Without ABHRS Certification |
|---|---|
| Passes written and oral exams built specifically for hair restoration surgery | Holds no exam credential in hair restoration |
| Carries certification recognized by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery | May belong to no hair restoration society at all |
| Gets graded on skill, knowledge, and aesthetic judgment | No formal assessment of aesthetic judgment |
| Demonstrates safe-practice standards specific to hair restoration surgery | Meets no certification standard specifically designed for this surgery |

Hair Restoration Built Around How Fairfield Lives
Fairfield holds more than 61,000 residents across Southport, Greenfield Hill, Stratfield, Mill Plain, and Fairfield Beach. Five miles of Long Island Sound shoreline runs along the town’s southern edge. Manhattan sits within 50 miles. Three Metro-North stations carry commuters into the city each weekday: Fairfield, Fairfield-Black Rock, and Southport. Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University fill the town with students and faculty. Each of the facts below changes how we handle your procedure.
-
1
You Already Commute Enough
Fairfield riders on the New Haven Line spend hours on trains every week. Traveling for a hair transplant can mean added flights, hotel stays, and time away from home. Our surgeons perform hair restoration and transplantation procedures on-site at our office, so your procedure may only require a short drive across town. FUE involves no stitches and does not leave a linear donor scar. With typically less postoperative discomfort and a faster recovery, you may be able to return to your usual morning train without a visible bandage drawing unwanted attention.

Fairfield Spans Every Age That Loses Hair
Male and female pattern hair loss is common and can begin at many stages in life. Male pattern hair loss affects approximately half of men by age 50 and up to 80% by age 70, while female pattern hair loss affects about 40% of women by age 50. A Fairfield University or Sacred Heart University student may notice early thinning or a receding hairline in their early 20s, while others may begin to see more pronounced thinning later in life. With more than 25 years of experience treating patients from age 9 to 89, Dr. Cohen develops an approach based on your individual hair-loss pattern, health, goals, and stage of life, not simply your age.

A Wrong Diagnosis Wastes Grafts
We take a dermatology-first approach to hair loss. Dr. Yesul Kim and Dr. Blake Brooks diagnose both scarring and non-scarring hair loss in men and women. What may appear to be male- or female-pattern hair loss can sometimes be a form of scarring alopecia, which requires a different course of care. Because active scarring alopecia can compromise transplant results, we first identify the underlying cause of your hair loss before recommending surgery.

What Your Consultation Includes
Your physician evaluates the extent of your hair loss and assesses your hair color, texture, curl pattern, and density. These factors help determine the coverage that a given number of grafts may provide. You will also receive a personalized treatment estimate during the same visit. Your physician will also explain each stage of treatment. Physicians oversee the consultation, diagnosis, surgical design, and graft extraction, while trained technicians place the grafts under direct physician supervision.
Thinking about a transplant versus a hairpiece? Hairpieces typically require ongoing replacement and maintenance. A hair transplant uses your own growing hair, which can be cut, styled, and cared for as part of your normal routine.
Consider treatment when your hair loss begins to bother you. Treating it early may help preserve more of your existing hair. If you seek treatment later, we can evaluate the most appropriate options to restore coverage and support your goals.
